Vale is the evolution of two Christchurch-based engineers who – after repairing and rebuilding over 40 properties together in three years – saw the need for healthy, affordable, low maintenance multiunit developments.
Callum Pithie and Zach Staples met at the University of Canterbury whilst studying a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil & Natural Engineering (their fourth year of study during the devasting Canterbury Earthquakes).
Upon graduation, Callum worked as a geotechnical and structural engineer on hundreds of residential and commercial projects in Christchurch, Auckland and surrounding areas. Zach started his own civil construction business, specialising in rebuilding damaged retaining walls on the severely damaged Christchurch Port Hills, completing over 100 projects in 5 years, and employing up to 15 staff.
In 2016, the pair saw opportunity to leverage their combined skillsets to remediate or redevelop dwellings still in disrepair from the earthquakes. In three years, they completed over 40 projects ranging in scale from simple single dwellings to complex multi unit and multi level dwellings ranging from $350,000 to $3,000,000 in value, growing their rental portfolio to 20 and working alongside some of the country’s best architects, contractors and real estate agents.
Their experiences as landlords of existing dwellings versus the experience of developing new builds revealed the lack of good quality housing stock (warm, dry, low maintenance, durable) and how this was affecting not only the quality of living for occupants, but the ongoing maintenance costs and time for homeowners and investors.
